Sunita Devi
Grassroots Women's Artisan Collective Leader
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
“Empowering 350+ rural women through indigenous handloom revival, financial literacy, and fair-trade global exports.”
About Sunita Devi
Sunita Devi is the president of Kaushal Vikas Mahila Samiti in Varanasi. She champions sustainable textile crafts, micro-savings collectives, and self-help groups, proving that traditional craftsmanship when paired with modern market access can transform entire villages.
The Turning Point & Life Journey
Married at 17 and facing economic hardship, Sunita started weaving Banarasi silk patterns in her courtyard. Refusing to accept exploitation by middlemen, she gathered 12 fellow weavers in 2015 to pool their savings and sell directly to ethical fashion buyers.
